Adobe has acquired Topaz Labs, a company specializing in AI models for video and image enhancement, to integrate its tools into its creative business. The acquisition, announced on Thursday, marks Adobe’s continued push into AI-driven creative tools. Topaz Labs, which has been in operation for over two decades, has developed several AI-based products, including Astra for video upscaling and Wonder for image retouching. Adobe, which already includes some of Topaz’s tools in its Creative Cloud suite, plans to incorporate the company’s models into its Firefly AI app and other editing suites. The integration will also make Topaz’s offerings available as standalone services through Adobe’s website.
Adobe’s VP of product marketing for Creative Cloud, Deepa Subramaniam, stated that professionals can use Topaz’s products for tasks like sharpening details, reducing noise, or restoring archival footage. Subramaniam highlighted that Topaz’s expertise in optimizing large AI models to run on consumer-grade GPUs will enable Adobe to deliver faster, more responsive experiences for customers. She also noted that Topaz is trusted by professionals across various creative fields, including designers, video editors, photographers, and enterprise teams. Adobe said the transaction will close in the second half of 2026.
Adobe has been competing with companies like Canva and Blackmagic Design in the video and image editing space. The company has been integrating AI into its apps and has launched an AI-focused media editing studio with Firefly. By acquiring startups like Topaz Labs, Adobe aims to retain its users and encourage them to stay within its ecosystem. Adobe said the acquisition will enhance its offerings in AI-driven creative tools and expand its reach in the market.
