Anthropic has modified its data retention policy to address concerns from enterprise clients, allowing customers to retain their data in their own cloud environments. The change follows months of development and feedback, with the company now enabling customers to store data locally rather than on Anthropic's servers. The 30-day data storage period remains in place, but the data will now reside with the customer instead of the company.
This adjustment aims to balance security with data control, particularly for regulated industries. Anthropic developer Boris Cherny confirmed the changes publicly on X, with the new system set to roll out this fall. According to Bloomberg, the company has worked with over 100 customers from regulated sectors to build the updated system.
The shift reflects a broader industry trend toward giving enterprises more control over their data while maintaining security measures. Rival OpenAI is exploring a similar approach through partnerships with Databricks and Microsoft, focusing on pairing security with data autonomy. The change comes after Anthropic acknowledged that the previous policy was a business risk and unpopular among enterprise clients.
The updated policy is intended to better align with enterprise needs while still supporting cybersecurity efforts. Source: thedecoder
