Anthropic unveiled Claude Science, a new AI product designed to support scientific research, during an event for pharmaceutical executives, biotech founders, and researchers on Tuesday. The tool is intended to function similarly to Claude Code, which aids in software engineering, by autonomously performing meaningful tasks when given concise instructions. It also provides access to specialized tools for computational biology and drug development. The company emphasized that this product is now available to all paid Claude users.

Claude Science is positioned as a full-featured, standalone product, elevating its status to match that of Claude Code and Claude Cowork. Anthropic’s head of life sciences, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, stated that the product represents a significant step in the company’s mission to develop AI that serves humanity’s long-term well-being. The company has also announced plans to use Claude Science for its own research into drugs for rare, neglected diseases.

Anthropic is not the first to explore AI in scientific research, having previously released plug-ins for life sciences. However, Claude Science marks a more substantial effort, with features such as running code on powerful computer clusters and prioritizing reproducibility. The tool is particularly designed for molecular and cellular biology and drug development, with demonstrations showing its ability to identify new drug candidates for phenylketonuria.
