Anthropic announced the creation of the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new entity that will allocate a portion of the company’s equity to public good initiatives. The fund will initially receive 5% of Anthropic’s shares, with an additional 2% added at the board’s discretion for every 50% increase in the company’s value above a set baseline.

The fund is structured as a wholly-owned LLC, offering flexibility in giving without engaging in lobbying or political activities. This approach allows Anthropic to scale its public benefit efforts as the company grows, with the share dedicated to the public good increasing alongside the company’s value.

Anthropic has already committed $200 million to studying labor market impacts from AI, but the fund will provide greater versatility to address these and other challenges. The company’s co-founders pledged 80% of their equity upon founding, and an employee equity donation match program has been in place since the company’s inception, with approximately half of employees participating.

"The more Anthropic grows, the larger the share of the company that can be dedicated expressly to the public good," said the company. This approach builds on existing commitments and aims to increase the percentage of shares allocated to public benefit, potentially reaching 20% when combined with today’s announcement.

The announcement follows Anthropic’s ongoing efforts to align with its mission as a public benefit corporation, including research in AI safety and biomedical applications. The company will share more details on the fund’s structure and governance in the coming months, along with progress updates on its mission.

Anthropic did not specify how the fund will allocate its resources beyond public benefit initiatives, and the company acknowledged the need for bolder approaches to address AI-related challenges. The fund will also report on its progress in an upcoming public benefit report.
