Apple has introduced an AI-powered update to its Shortcuts app, making it easier for users to create complex workflows by simply describing their tasks in natural language. The new feature, part of iOS 27, leverages Apple Intelligence to interpret user prompts and automatically generate the necessary steps for automation. This change aims to make the app more accessible to non-technical users who previously had to manually configure app actions and variables. The update will be available later this fall with the release of iOS 27.
According to Apple, the AI update simplifies the process of building shortcuts by eliminating the need for users to find specific app actions or variables. For example, users can now describe a task like notifying a partner when they leave work and receive an estimated time of arrival. The system will then automatically pull together the required actions, such as accessing a stored address, calculating the ETA using Apple Maps, and sending the alert via Messages. Users can also make edits by describing their changes, such as adding a podcast to play after the task is completed.
Celcia Dantas, Sr. Manager of Home Software Product Marketing, acknowledged during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference that creating shortcuts can feel complicated, but the AI update makes the process more approachable. The feature expands what non-technical users can accomplish with the app, as they no longer need to navigate the complexities of traditional workflow creation.
