Backflip AI has released its second AI model for CAD generation, enabling users to convert 3D scans and mesh files into fully editable, parametric CAD models in just a few minutes. This development aims to streamline a process that traditionally requires extensive CAD expertise and significant time, according to the company. The tool runs as an add-in for Autodesk Fusion, offering four free reconstructions and paid plans starting at $20 per month. The startup, which has been active since December 2024, is backed by $30 million in funding.
Unlike earlier AI models that only generated triangle-based surface meshes, Backflip's tool produces actual CAD operations like extrusions and revolutions. This capability ensures that the resulting models remain easy to modify, making the tool particularly valuable for industries that rely on precise digital designs. The company emphasized that digitizing components is especially important in automotive and aerospace sectors, where it plays a key role in prototyping and designing new parts.
According to CEO Greg Mark, most factories have digital models for less than one percent of their parts, highlighting the significant demand for such technology. Backflip AI's solution is designed to address this gap by drastically reducing the time and expertise required to create editable CAD models. The tool's ability to transform 3D scans into editable models represents a major step forward in digital manufacturing.
