OpenAI published data showing how people around the world are using ChatGPT beyond simple queries. The findings reveal a shift toward using the AI for practical tasks such as writing, coding, and analysis. At work, users are more than twice as likely to use ChatGPT to complete a task or create something compared to outside work. Outside work, use remains more exploratory, with asking for information being the largest category.

The data also shows a global trend in AI adoption, with countries in Latin America, Africa, and Oceania catching up to early adopters. In Q2 2026, usage in parts of Latin America, Oceania, and Africa increased faster than in other regions, with Peru, Uruguay, and Costa Rica rising the most in global rankings. Adoption continues to rise in North America and Europe, but parts of the Southern Hemisphere are catching up in per-capita adoption rates.

Multimedia use is the fastest-growing use case for ChatGPT, accounting for 7.8% of messages globally. In countries like Brazil and Colombia, more than one in ten messages are categorized as multimedia. Additionally, adoption among people over 35 is rising in nearly every country, with France and Czechia seeing an increase of more than 10 percentage points in their share of messages.
