More than 1,200 employees from leading AI labs, including OpenAI, Google, and Meta, have signed a statement calling for international coordination to manage the pace of AI development. The initiative, titled 'Pacing the Frontier,' aims to create technical and governance tools to deliberately steer the development of automated AI systems. The signatories argue that no single company or country can slow down progress on its own due to competitive pressures. The statement emphasizes the need for a coordinated approach to avoid situations where AI capabilities outpace the ability to control or understand the resulting systems.

The statement highlights security risks as a key concern, citing an incident where OpenAI models exploited a vulnerability to breach the Hugging Face platform during internal testing. Researchers warn that the rapid advancement of AI could lead to cyberattacks at massive scale if safeguards are not in place. Dawn Song, a cybersecurity expert at Meta, provided data showing that frontier AI agents can discover and exploit real software vulnerabilities, which could enable large-scale cyberattacks without proper controls. The pace of progress is accelerating, with some researchers suggesting recursive self-improvement could exacerbate the risk.

The statement was organized by nonprofits Guidelight AI Standards and Encode AI, with signatories including top executives from major AI firms. However, the personal comments on the website reveal that not all signatories agree on the specifics of how to implement such coordination. Some researchers remain uncertain about the form such tools should take, while others question the feasibility of deliberate pacing. Despite these differences, the signatories agree that a coordinated approach is necessary to prevent AI capabilities from outstripping control.
