Jeff Bezos has invested $50 million in Flourish, a neuro AI startup, to develop synthetic intelligence that mimics the human brain's efficiency and learning capabilities. The funding came after Bezos read a pitch from Rob Williams, who previously worked on Amazon’s Alexa. The company aims to create an AI system that uses 50 watts or less of power, significantly less than the energy consumed by large language models. Flourish’s goal is to build an AI that can learn continuously and adapt to its environment, much like the human brain. The project is backed by other investors, including Lux Capital and Google Ventures, bringing the total funding to $500 million and a reported valuation of $2.5 billion. Source: wired

Flourish’s co-founder Thomas Reardon argues that current AI models are inefficient and consume excessive energy. A person uses about 20 watts of energy to process information, while a single chip in an AI training cluster uses more than 30 times that amount. Large language models also require vast amounts of data to train, often needing to process all of what humans have written. Reardon believes that the human brain offers a more efficient model for AI development, and the company is working to replicate that efficiency. The project is part of a broader movement to develop AI inspired by the brain. Companies like Cortical Labs and Merge Labs are also exploring neuromorphic approaches. OpenAI’s Sam Altman supports research that bridges biological and artificial intelligence, while Meta’s TRIBE v2 model claims to act as a digital twin of human neural activity. Despite the competition, Flourish’s unique strength lies in its team of neuroscientists and AI researchers working side by side. Source: wired
