Meta has entered into its first AI data center agreement in India, partnering with Reliance Industries to develop a 168-megawatt facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The collaboration, announced on June 10, 2026, marks a significant step in Meta’s expansion of AI infrastructure in the region. The data center, which will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater, is expected to be operational within two years and can be expanded over time. Meta has committed to covering the full cost of the energy and water required for its operations at the site. Reliance said the facility will support Meta’s global AI computing needs and integrate India more directly into the company’s worldwide network of AI facilities. Source: techcrunch

The deal reflects a broader trend of tech giants investing in India’s growing AI infrastructure market. Companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Uber have also announced AI and cloud infrastructure investments in the country, which has expanded its data center capacity from about 375 megawatts in 2020 to around 1.5 gigawatts in 2025. Industry estimates suggest this figure could grow more than fivefold to over 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade, driven by cloud adoption, AI workloads, and the demand for local data processing. New Delhi has incentivized such investments through policies like tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers on overseas services, provided those workloads are run from Indian data centers. The partnership builds on Meta’s existing $5.7 billion investment in Reliance’s Jio Platforms, which has evolved into a $100 million joint venture focused on developing enterprise AI solutions for customers in India and abroad. Reliance has also committed to providing end-to-end services for the facility, including design, construction, renewable power, connectivity, and ongoing operations, signaling its ambition to become a one-stop shop for AI infrastructure for global technology companies. Meta has also contracted nearly 1 gigawatt of new renewable energy capacity in India through agreements with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy, which will support the Jamnagar facility.
