Meta released the Glimmer model on Monday, an open-weight AI designed to run locally on consumer hardware, offering insight into its vision for personal superintelligence. The 30-billion parameter model is an open version of Meta’s more powerful Muse Spark, which was introduced in April. Developers can download and modify Glimmer’s weights under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing for local execution of AI agents. Glimmer is intended to perform multi-step tasks such as coding, file management, and workflow execution on devices with a single consumer GPU. It supports text and images and was trained across more than 100 languages, according to the company.

Meta envisions Glimmer being used for managing schedules, drafting messages, and organizing files, all while minimizing data exposure by processing information locally. This approach aligns with the company’s focus on privacy-sensitive personal agents. The model is also designed to be 'always-on' and functional 'anywhere, anytime, with or without an internet connection.' This vision mirrors Zuckerberg’s long-term goals for Meta, which include distributing advanced AI to empower individuals rather than concentrating it within a few companies.

Zuckerberg emphasized in a new letter that distributing superintelligence widely could lead to a new era of personal empowerment, enabling individuals to improve their lives and the world. He outlined potential uses, such as a personal agent working 24/7 to enhance relationships, health, and finances. However, access does not equate to ownership, as Meta is increasingly distinguishing between models it will release openly and those it will keep under its control. Muse Spark, the more powerful model, remains closed-weight, while Glimmer can be downloaded and fine-tuned. This distinction highlights where Meta may draw the line between AI it wants users to own and the more advanced intelligence it retains.
