Nvidia is taking steps to reduce its reliance on large technology companies by supporting AI startups with financial guarantees. The chipmaker is offering young cloud providers broad financial assurances, enabling them to afford costly AI chips. In exchange, Nvidia secures a share of their cloud revenue. Specifically, the company assures that it will lease back unused GPUs if the providers cannot find AI developers as customers. This strategy allows Nvidia to decrease its heavy dependence on tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, which still account for the majority of its chip sales while developing their own AI hardware.

According to a data center executive, Nvidia's approach is effective in addressing two challenges at once. "Nvidia kills two birds with one stone," the executive said. If Nvidia only guaranteed the building leases, "then you're still stuck with, 'How do you finance the GPUs?'" But when Nvidia guarantees it will pay for unused compute capacity, "the GPUs get financed and the data center gets financed." This method helps Nvidia ensure its chips are used in a broader range of applications, reducing its exposure to the dominant players in the cloud computing space.

The move comes as Nvidia faces increasing competition from other chipmakers and as major tech firms continue to develop their own AI infrastructure. By fostering a new ecosystem of AI startups, Nvidia aims to strengthen its market position and ensure a more balanced distribution of its products. Source: thedecoder
