OpenAI announced the acquisition of Orchestra Bio, a four-year-old AI biotech startup, to strengthen its biotech business.
The startup, which had raised around $20 million as of 2025 from backers like Andreessen Horowitz, Atria, and 8VC, specializes in AI agents that assist biotech companies with drug discovery operations.
OpenAI plans to integrate Orchestra’s team and technology into its Rosalind model and Workbench tool to improve life sciences research.
OpenAI reported that its Rosalind model has already attracted major biotech clients, including Moderna and Novo Nordisk. The acquisition marks a growing trend of AI labs expanding into pharmaceutical industries, with OpenAI and Anthropic leading the charge. The move reflects the increasing role of AI in streamlining drug discovery processes and managing clinical trial logistics.
"Orchestra Bio’s AI agents help biotech companies manage the minutiae of drug discovery operations, from tracking finances to resolving scheduling issues with clinical trials," said a representative from OpenAI. The integration of Orchestra’s technology is expected to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of OpenAI’s tools for life sciences research.
The acquisition follows a broader trend of AI labs acquiring startups to expand their offerings in key industries. OpenAI did not specify the terms of the deal, and the exact impact on Orchestra’s operations remains unclear. The company plans to focus on integrating the startup’s technology into its existing platforms to improve research outcomes.
