OpenAI has introduced a new feature for its Codex coding agent, enabling users to bank their rate-limit resets and use them at their convenience. Rate limits typically reset automatically, but this update allows users to store unused resets for later use. This change comes as part of OpenAI's efforts to meet user demand for greater flexibility in accessing its AI coding tools.

Users on the Go, Plus, Pro, and Business plans each receive one free reset to start. Plus and Pro users can also invite up to three friends to try Codex over the next two weeks. Once an invited friend sends their first Codex message, both the inviter and the friend receive an additional banked reset. OpenAI stated that this update is a direct response to user feedback and reflects the evolving landscape of AI service offerings.

The move is seen as part of a broader trend in the AI industry, with OpenAI reportedly considering token pricing cuts to attract customers from competitors like Anthropic. CEO Sam Altman highlighted the growing importance of cost management for companies using AI services. OpenAI said the change is a response to user demand for more flexibility. But it's also a sign of the AI price wars likely brewing with Anthropic. After AI costs surged recently, OpenAI is reportedly considering cuts to its token pricing to poach Anthropic customers. CEO Sam Altman recently said at an event that AI costs have become a 'huge issue' for companies.
