What changed
On October 30, 2026, OpenAI announced two key updates to its safety protocols: the launch of a Community Safety Report and stronger policy boundaries for all users, particularly those under 18. The Community Safety Report will provide transparency on how OpenAI’s systems detect, investigate, and respond to harmful content, with the first report expected in early 2027. Additionally, OpenAI is implementing stricter limits on how ChatGPT responds to questions about past mass attacks, including details about weapons and equipment used, to reduce the risk of misuse.
What this means in practice
The new protections for teens include further restrictions on weapons-related information, even for seemingly harmless questions. These measures aim to reduce exposure to sensitive content and prevent the facilitation of violence. OpenAI is also enhancing its age prediction system to more accurately identify users under 18 and apply appropriate safeguards. Parents can use parental controls to link their accounts to their teens and manage safety settings together. If a teen’s account is paused for repeatedly discussing violence, parents will receive notifications.
Limitations and availability
The Community Safety Report will be published every six months starting in early 2027. The new safeguards, including restrictions on firearms content and enhanced age detection, will begin rolling out in the next few weeks. OpenAI emphasized that these measures are part of an ongoing effort to improve safety and will continue to refine them based on real-world feedback and expert input.
