A new AI assistant named Orchid has been promoted as a solution to relationship problems by taking over tasks for inconsiderate partners. In a viral ad, the AI agent helps a boyfriend, Sam, who has forgotten his anniversary, by making a reservation and purchasing his girlfriend’s favorite flowers. The ad shows the girlfriend, who is aware of Orchid’s actions, allows Sam to take credit for the plan. The ad has sparked mixed reactions online, with some users criticizing it for targeting 'adult babies uninterested in the world they live in' and perpetuating 'dead-end relationships.'

The company claims Orchid is designed to automate daily tasks across connected apps, offering a seamless experience without switching between them. However, experts argue that relying on AI to manage relationship responsibilities may prevent couples from addressing deeper issues. Lauren Maher, a licensed marriage and family therapist, warns that outsourcing difficult communication can hinder emotional growth and prevent couples from facing the 'messy but meaningful growing pains' of their relationship. She also notes that 'triangulation'—using a third party, like AI, for communication—is generally discouraged in couples therapy.

The ad’s effectiveness in solving relationship problems remains unclear. A recent survey by astrology app Hint found that 59 percent of participants felt AI advice made dating decisions harder, with 47 percent delaying decisions due to overwhelming guidance. Orchid’s focus appears to be on workflow automation rather than relationship improvement, as its larger ambitions are centered on streamlining daily tasks. The company, which aims to redefine how people manage their lives, has yet to comment on the controversy surrounding its latest campaign.
