Spotify is expanding its AI voice interface, enabling Premium subscribers to interact with the service through text and voice commands within the app. Users can now issue direct commands such as 'Play some artists I haven't heard before,' 'make it more upbeat,' or 'just his recent stuff.' The feature is designed to enhance user engagement by allowing interactions with the music player in a more natural way. The new functionality is part of Spotify's broader push into AI-driven personalization and content creation.
In the playback view, users can ask questions about songs, artists, podcasts, and audiobooks, including queries about their personal listening history, such as 'When did I first listen to this song?' Spotify also claims it can answer general knowledge questions like 'When was the Odyssey written?' However, the company warns that more complex topics might lead to hallucinations. The conversational feature is being launched in beta for users aged 18 and older in the US, Ireland, and Sweden.
Spotify had already introduced AI-generated playlists, allowing users to create personalized playlists from text prompts. The platform is also becoming a growing hub for AI-generated content, with authors using ElevenLabs to publish audiobooks with AI-generated voices. At the same time, Spotify is addressing the issue of AI-generated songs, some of which are artificially boosted by bots. The new feature is part of Spotify's ongoing efforts to integrate AI into its ecosystem.
