X has launched a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to streamline integration for AI tools. The move allows developers to connect AI assistants like Claude, Cursor, Grok Build, and other MCP-compatible apps directly to X’s platform without building their own MCP server. The hosted server lets AI tools communicate with the X API using a user’s own account permissions, reducing the time developers spend on integration work. This change enables developers to focus on building their applications rather than managing infrastructure. X said the hosted MCP doesn’t add new capabilities to its API but makes existing ones easier to expose to AI applications. By doing so, X aims to position itself as an information network with real-time data for retrieval and analysis.

The hosted MCP server joins a growing list of companies offering official MCP endpoints, including GitHub, Slack, Notion, Stripe, and Salesforce. X emphasized that the hosted MCP doesn’t bypass its API rules, which continue to restrict use if the company detects spammy behavior. Earlier this year, X updated its API v2 to address AI-generated spam, particularly programmatic replies to conversations. Additionally, X recently increased API pricing for publishing posts to $0.015 and posting links to $0.20. These price hikes were intended to curb misuse, according to X.

X’s decision to offer a hosted MCP server reflects its strategy to make its platform more accessible for AI tools while maintaining control over its API usage. The company has long allowed developers to search X, read posts, look up users, and analyze conversations through its API. The new server is meant to simplify these interactions for AI applications without introducing new functionalities.
