Anthropic is positioning itself for a potential IPO by highlighting a theoretical market opportunity of more than $30 trillion. The company aims to sell investors on this vast potential, which it claims could be realized if AI models take on a wide range of tasks. This figure is presented as the total addressable market (TAM), representing the annual revenue a company could theoretically achieve if it controlled the entire market. Anthropic's TAM estimate surpasses SpaceX's $28.5 trillion projection from May 2026, which the company called the 'largest actionable TAM in the history of mankind.'

The company's revenue growth has been significant, with a doubling of earnings in the second quarter to $11.6 billion. Anthropic expects its revenue to reach between $190 billion and $200 billion by 2028. It is also pursuing a valuation of approximately $2 trillion and plans to raise up to $100 billion through its IPO, which could occur in September or October. These projections are based on the assumption that AI models will take on a broad array of tasks, expanding the market for its services.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Anthropic is using these figures to attract investor interest ahead of its IPO. The company's strategy involves presenting a large TAM to justify its valuation and fundraising goals. However, the scale of these numbers raises questions, as the combined revenue of 191 tech firms in the S&P 1500 was only $2.4 trillion in 2025. Despite this, Anthropic remains optimistic about the potential for AI-driven growth.
