Mistral and Mozilla released Firefox Smart Window on September 16, 2026, saying it enhances AI browsing with privacy, control, and multilingual support. It is the company's first major update to its open-source AI models since its initial release in 2024.

Mistral reported the model is trained on regional languages and dialects, measured on cultural context and local nuance. That compares with its earlier models, which were focused on global languages.

Firefox Smart Window is built on Mistral's open-source architecture and targets users who need AI assistance with complex searches and information retrieval. Availability begins in France and North America, initially for users in those regions.

"This partnership represents two open source advocates working together to bring Mistral’s scientific innovations to Mozilla’s consumers around the world," said Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, CEO, Mozilla Corporation. The partnership is rooted in a shared commitment to user choice, control and openness.

The announcement follows Mozilla's long-standing focus on open web and privacy. The source itself frames the significance as a step toward ensuring the browser remains a place where different AI providers can compete.

Mistral did not say how the model will scale globally, and it raised the open question of how to maintain local nuance across different regions. The source says the model will expand to the United Kingdom and Germany later this year.
