OpenAI released the Rosalind Academic Plan on October 15, 2026, saying it aims to provide academic researchers with access to GPT-Rosalind, its dedicated life sciences model. It is the company's first major update to its academic research initiatives since the launch of the GPT series.

OpenAI reported that eligible labs can receive up to 30 Business Standard seats at $0 per user per month for up to 12 months. That compares with previous access models that required paid subscriptions.

Rosalind is built on OpenAI's frontier model architecture and targets life sciences research, including drug and protein design, genomics, and wet-lab assistance. Availability begins with academic labs at U.S. universities, initially for researchers without an OpenAI Enterprise agreement.

"GPT-Rosalind helped me gather drug physicochemical parameters faster," said Dr. Mathieu Bourdenx, Bourdenx Lab. "PubChem and NCBI tools helped me work across ten drugs while refining the distinction between predicted and experimentally measured values."

The announcement follows OpenAI's broader efforts to expand AI access for scientific research. OpenAI said the plan supports foundational research that drives medical and biotechnological advancements.

OpenAI did not say how long the free access will continue beyond 12 months, and it raised the question of how researchers will manage long-term resource needs. The company said it will continue to evaluate and expand the program based on feedback.
