Niteshift, an AI coding startup founded by former Datadog engineers Sajid Mehmood and Conor Branagan, has raised $7 million in seed funding. The round was led by Greylock’s Jerry Chen and included notable angel investors such as Reid Hoffman, Olivier Pomel, and Misha Laskin. The company aims to provide an alternative to major AI model providers by offering infrastructure that separates coding models from orchestration needs.
Mehmood, who serves as CEO, argues that companies are increasingly wary of relying on large AI model providers like OpenAI and Anthropic, given their tendency to launch competing products that can disrupt smaller businesses. He drew a parallel to Datadog’s early growth, when the company won e-commerce clients who preferred not to use Amazon Web Services. Mehmood believes a similar dynamic is occurring in the AI space, with major players moving into vertical software markets.
Niteshift’s approach is to offer a cloud-based AI coding platform that routes between various models, including open-source options, based on project needs. Unlike competitors that sell tokens, Niteshift sells infrastructure, charging per-minute usage rates. The company’s strategy is to provide a model-agnostic platform, allowing developers to avoid vendor lock-in. However, Niteshift faces competition from established players like Cursor, Cognition, and OpenRouter, which have already raised significant funding.
