OpenAI announced the launch of commercial operations in Brazil, marking a significant step in deepening its long-term commitment to the country. Based in São Paulo, the local team will work with Brazilian businesses, developers, researchers, and public institutions to help translate the country’s rapid AI adoption into economic growth and meaningful progress. Brazil is one of ChatGPT’s three largest markets by weekly active users, with user numbers nearly doubling over the past year. "The most exciting part isn’t just the scale of adoption. It’s the creativity and the energy behind it," said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. "Brazil has an extraordinary community of entrepreneurs, businesses, and developers that are finding distinct ways to put AI to work and building in Brazil for Brazil."
An independent study by RegLab, funded by OpenAI, estimates that AI could add nearly R$1 trillion to Brazil’s economy by 2030. The study highlights the need for more than just access to technology, emphasizing the importance of skills, research, responsible deployment, and collaboration with Brazilian institutions. New data shows that in June 2026, 35% of classified messages from individual ChatGPT accounts in Brazil were work-related, compared with 30% globally. Of these, 53% asked Chat, GPT to complete a task or produce an output, such as drafting proposals, analyzing information, writing code, or creating marketing materials.
Brazil’s developer ecosystem is growing rapidly, with the country ranking second globally in the number of developers using the OpenAI API. It is also Codex’s largest market in Latin America, with weekly Codex users in Brazil increasing more than elevenfold since the beginning of 2026. The number of ChatGPT Enterprise seats in Brazil has also increased fivefold year over year, and Brazil ranks among OpenAI’s ten largest markets by number of business customers.
