Amulya Vishwanath, founder and managing partner of Techable Ventures, described the current state of physical AI as being in its 'LEGO era,' with foundational software and building blocks for robotics being rethought.
She explained that the industry is now focused on building the basics — such as robotic hands or actuators — that will eventually come together to form more complex systems.
According to Vishwanath, the current phase mirrors past technological revolutions, such as the internet era and the Industrial Revolution. She emphasized that innovation will scale as more components are developed and integrated, much like how LEGO pieces are combined to build larger structures.
"There are a lot of foundational software and building blocks for robotics that are being rethought right now as we speak, and it’s super important in order for innovation to scale," said Vishwanath. She added that talent is a critical factor in the U.S. market, and her firm helps founders connect with top talent to stay competitive.
The conversation took place during an interview with TechCrunch’s Equity, where Vishwanath discussed the broader implications of physical AI development. She highlighted the importance of continued investment and collaboration in the space, noting that the industry is at a pivotal stage.
Vishwanath did not specify when the industry will reach a 'ChatGPT moment' for robotics, but she suggested that it is a matter of time before significant progress is made. She also pointed out that the current environment presents both opportunities and challenges for startups and investors.
