Smartsheet released its Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server on AWS, enabling AI agents to interact with work management data using natural language. This is the company's first major update to its work management integration framework since its initial release.

The MCP Server provides structured context for AI agents, allowing them to read, write, and manage Smartsheet data through a standardized protocol. It supports over 40 tools for managing sheets, rows, columns, and automations.

The protocol is designed to reduce payload sizes and improve efficiency for AI-assisted queries across large project portfolios.

"Smartsheet MCP Server is the central integration layer that connects AI agents to work management data," said Smartsheet. This architecture allows for seamless interaction between AI tools and Smartsheet's API layer, enabling real-time updates and data retrieval.

The server is available at three regional endpoints, supporting both OAuth 2.0 and Personal Access Token authentication. It is optimized for scalability and performance, with reduced latency and cost for large-scale operations.

The MCP Server is designed for use with Amazon Quick and Kiro, two AI tools that integrate with Smartsheet through the protocol.

Amazon Quick allows business users to query and update Smartsheet data without coding, while Kiro provides developers with access to project specs and task statuses within their coding workflow.

The integration simplifies task management, enabling users to update statuses and track dependencies directly from these tools.

"With MCP, developers can access live project data without leaving their coding environment," said Smartsheet. This capability enhances productivity by reducing context-switching and streamlining workflows.

The integration with Kiro is particularly useful for developers who need real-time updates on task statuses and project dependencies. Smartsheet emphasized that the MCP Server is a key enabler for AI agents working within enterprise workflows.

Smartsheet did not specify the exact number of users or organizations that will initially use the MCP Server, and it remains unclear how widely the protocol will be adopted beyond its current integrations.

The company plans to expand the MCP Server’s capabilities in the future, with ongoing development focused on improving efficiency and scalability. The release follows Smartsheet’s efforts to enhance its integration with AWS services, aiming to provide more robust AI-driven work management solutions.
