Twitch will now use creators' content to train generative AI models for Amazon, the platform's parent company. This change has sparked immediate backlash from the Twitch community, as creators are opted in by default. The move has raised concerns that streamers may unknowingly surrender their content to train Amazon’s AI models. Twitch streamers often record livestreams for hours each week, making their content particularly valuable for AI training.
Twitch Head of Community Mary Kish and Chief Product Officer Mike Minton addressed the backlash in a live stream, acknowledging the community's frustration. Minton explained that an opt-in approach would likely result in few sign-ups, hence the opt-out model. Kish noted that Twitch is not alone in using user content for AI training, as Meta also uses public content from its platforms for similar purposes.
Kish emphasized that providing an opt-out option reflects the community's desire to prevent generative AI training. Users can opt out by navigating to their channel settings, selecting the security and privacy tab, and toggling off the option for AI training.
