Albertsons Cos. is expanding its collaboration with OpenAI to integrate AI tools such as ChatGPT Enterprise into its retail operations, aiming to enhance customer experiences across its 2,200 stores. The initiative seeks to streamline workflows and improve decision-making processes for both employees and shoppers.
The company reported that AI-powered tools are being used by teams building retail technology and business functions where AI can drive meaningful impact. By focusing on specific areas first, Albertsons aims to evaluate effectiveness, build repeatable practices, and lay a foundation for broader innovation.
The new Safeway experience in ChatGPT is an example of how AI can simplify grocery shopping. Shoppers can start with a recipe, photo, digital list, or simple request, and ChatGPT surfaces relevant products and savings, helping build a cart and direct customers to Safeway for checkout.
"This is another practical way we are using AI to reduce friction and make everyday shopping easier," said Jill Pavlovich, SVP, Digital Customer Experience at Albertsons Companies. The new experience expands on Albertsons’ AI shopping assistant and Ask AI capabilities, with plans to grow beyond Safeway to other grocery brands.
The announcement follows a broader investment in how work gets done through AI-powered tools, including ChatGPT Enterprise. Albertsons is combining predictive models with generative AI to deliver data-driven recommendations and promotional insights, helping merchants make more informed decisions.
Albertsons did not say how the new AI tools will be integrated across all its brands, and the company raised the open question of how AI can scale across the retail sector. The progress is supported by a broader set of OpenAI-powered capabilities, from employee tools to commerce apps and advertising solutions that can be extended across the enterprise.
