Amazon announced the integration of secure web search capabilities into Claude Desktop using Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. The update allows Claude Desktop to access real-time data from the web, expanding its ability to provide current information such as pricing and weather updates. This is the first major update to the Claude Desktop experience since its initial release.
Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, a platform for building and optimizing AI agents, now supports web search through its AgentCore Gateway. This feature is backed by an Amazon web index covering tens of billions of documents, ensuring all query traffic remains within AWS infrastructure.
The update is currently available in the US East (N. Virginia), Europe (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo) AWS Regions.
"With AgentCore Gateway, you can close this knowledge cutoff gap by connecting Claude Desktop to Web Search," said Amazon. The integration uses JSON Web Token (JWT)-based inbound authentication to secure the communication between Claude Desktop and the web search capability. This approach aligns with existing enterprise identity governance practices, eliminating the need for separate credentials or third-party identity providers.
The announcement follows Amazon’s recent focus on expanding AI agent capabilities within its cloud ecosystem. Amazon said the integration supports enterprises using AWS IAM Identity Center for SSO access, ensuring a seamless and secure connection between Claude Desktop and web search resources.
Amazon did not specify the exact number of users or organizations adopting the update, and it remains unclear how widely the feature will be used beyond its initial release. The company plans to continue enhancing AI agent capabilities through its Bedrock platform.
