Amazon SageMaker released the AI optimized generative AI inference skill on June 12, 2024, saying it allows coding agents to benchmark and optimize endpoints for production. It is the company's first software update in the generative AI inference space since the launch of SageMaker AI in 2023.

Amazon SageMaker reported the skill enables real-time performance benchmarking with measurable metrics like throughput and latency, measured on SageMaker AI endpoints. That compares with previous tools that lacked such detailed performance data.

The skill is built on the SageMaker Python SDK v3 and targets developers looking to optimize model deployment for performance and cost. Availability begins with the Agent Toolkit for AWS, initially for developers using supported coding agents like Kiro, Claude Code, and Codex.

"Install the skill, and your existing agent can benchmark endpoints, recommend deployment configurations, and generate executable SageMaker Python SDK v3 code on your behalf," said Amazon SageMaker team. The skill acts as a toolkit that plugs into any coding agent that supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), turning it into a Sage,Maker AI inference optimization expert.

The announcement follows Amazon's broader push to integrate generative AI into its cloud services. Amazon said the skill helps developers move faster from model to production by bridging the gap between intent and infrastructure.

Amazon SageMaker did not say how the skill will perform with non-SageMaker models, and it raised the question of how well it adapts to different use cases. The skill is now available for developers to test and integrate into their workflows.
