AMD released Poro2, a 70-billion-parameter model, on September 15, 2026, to simplify medical terminology for Finnish-speaking patients. It is the company's first medical text processing update since its initial AI/ML release in 2024.
AMD reported Poro2 achieved improved accuracy and fluency in medical translations, measured on a quantitative evaluation of patient-friendly Finnish outputs. That compares with earlier models that often failed to simplify complex medical terms effectively.
Poro2 is built on AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs and targets medical text processing for Finnish-speaking patients. Availability begins with a Kubernetes deployment on AMD platforms, initially for healthcare institutions and Lingsoft collaborators.
"Medical documentation contains specialized terminology, such as terms like 'hepatomegalia' or 'bilateraalinen pleuraeffuusio', that healthcare professionals understand but patients struggle to comprehend," said Sebastian Remander, AI/ML lead at AMD. The model enriches medical terminology using a hand-curated dictionary and MeSH knowledge graph.
The announcement follows collaboration with Lingsoft, a Finnish language technology company. AMD emphasized the importance of making medical information accessible to patients, adding no judgement of your own.
AMD did not say how Poro2 will perform with non-Finnish medical terms, and raised the open question of how to maintain terminology accuracy as medical language evolves. The company said the model will continue to be developed with input from healthcare professionals.
