Anthropic released Mods for Claude Code on October 3, 2026, allowing developers to customize the AI coding tool's functionality. It is the company's first major update since the launch of the desktop app in 2025.

Anthropic reported no specific benchmark scores or parameter counts, but the Mods system is built on JavaScript and TypeScript, targeting developers who want to modify the tool's behavior. Availability begins with the release of the first official Mod plugin, initially for developers and organizations.

"Mods are JavaScript or TypeScript functions that hook into specific events, from tool calls and user prompts to UI rendering," said Matthias Bastian, a contributor at thedecoder. The system lets developers add custom panels next to the chat, intercept tool calls, or wire up entirely new commands.

The announcement follows the release of the desktop app, which marked a significant step in expanding Claude Code's accessibility. Anthropic framed the Mods system as an extension of its commitment to developer flexibility and customization.

Anthropic did not say how many Mods will be available in the future, and the company raised concerns about security, warning users to only install Mods from trusted sources. The first official Mod plugin, called 'You Should Know,' will be available soon.
