Apple released a new version of Siri in September 2026, saying it now runs on Google's Gemini models and processes data partly on the device, partly through a cloud. It is the company's first major update to the assistant since its initial launch in 2011.
Apple reported the new Siri can read screen content and personal context from messages or photos, and carry out tasks across different apps. That compares with the previous version, which lacked these capabilities.
The revamped Siri is built on Google's Gemini models and targets users who want more seamless integration with their personal data and third-party apps. Availability begins with a beta release, initially for English-speaking users.
"Siri AI is now available as a beta, in English only for now," said Apple. Support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish is set to follow next month.
The announcement follows years of delays that cost people their jobs, with Apple stating it closed the gap with Google with Google's help. The company said it is working on a path that protects users' privacy and security.
Apple did not say when the service will launch in the EU and China, and noted that certain server-side features come with daily usage limits, with expanded access set to cost money down the line.
