Paul Meade, Apple's vice president overseeing the Vision Pro headset, is reportedly leaving the company to join OpenAI’s hardware team, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Meade also reportedly led the development of Apple’s planned AI-powered smart glasses, set for release next year. The costly Vision Pro was not a commercial success, but Apple is hoping more affordable smart glasses will help it compete with Meta’s wearable devices.
Gurman frames Meade’s departure as a result of John Ternus’ anticipated promotion to Apple CEO and Ternus’ decision to restructure the hardware engineering team, which left some vice presidents feeling demoted. OpenAI, meanwhile, is already collaborating with Apple’s former chief design officer, Jony Ive, on an AI device that CEO Sam Altman has described as more peaceful and calm than an iPhone, though reports from last fall indicated the project was facing challenges in finalizing details.
