AWS released AgentCore Gateway on June 2024, saying it enables AI agents to reason over data spread across multiple AWS accounts without copying or centralizing it. It is the company's first major update to its AI agent infrastructure since the launch of Amazon Bedrock in 2023.
AWS reported the architecture supports secure, distributed access to line-of-business data, measured by its ability to keep data within its owning account while allowing agents to query across them. That compares with previous methods that required data replication or cross-account IAM management.
AgentCore Gateway is built on Amazon Bedrock and targets enterprises needing secure, scalable AI agent solutions for distributed data. Availability begins in public preview, initially for AWS customers with multi-account architectures.
"The goal is to let data stay where it already lives, in each line-of-business account," said AWS. "Only the specific data a request needs flows out at query time, so the underlying datasets do not leave their owning account."
The announcement follows the growing demand for AI agents that can operate across distributed systems. AWS said the solution addresses the challenge of maintaining data ownership and security while enabling cross-account access.
AWS did not say how the solution will scale to thousands of accounts, and raised the question of how to balance governance with flexibility in multi-account environments. The company said it will continue to refine the architecture for production readiness.
