David Lawrence, a Harvard Law dropout, founded Blue Voice after witnessing a campus shooting involving a police officer. He realized most policing errors occur when officers lack instant access to department rules. Lawrence, along with co-founders Amit Patankar and Michael Gropman, launched Blue Voice to address this issue using AI. The startup now provides real-time policy guidance to officers in the field, helping them follow department protocol.
Blue Voice, which operates in 25 states, allows officers to access detailed school maps during active-shooter emergencies and consult on legal grounds for interventions. The platform answers a question every minute and ensures officers are directed to original regulations rather than generated answers. Lawrence said the tool gives officers confidence because it relies on department-specific laws and guidelines, which general-purpose AI tools cannot access. Before Blue Voice, officers had to rely on memory, manuals, or generic AI tools that often provided incorrect answers up to 30% of the time.
Lawrence noted that Blue Voice’s customer base grew elevenfold in the last year due to concrete results, including reduced crime and fewer operational controversies. The startup recently helped prevent a kidnapping after a rookie officer consulted Blue Voice on his phone. The app confirmed the situation met the legal criteria for 'child enticement,' allowing the officer to act. In another case, Blue Voice reminded a department chief that he couldn’t return an officer to active-duty following a shooting without a mental health evaluation.
