Bluesky’s AI assistant, Attie, is gaining new capabilities as it transforms into an open social research tool. The company announced this week that it has introduced a feature called Quests, which allows users to ask open-ended questions to gather information about what is trending on the broader Bluesky social network, known as the Atmosphere. This includes not only Bluesky itself but any application that integrates with the AT Protocol. The update aims to help users better understand the open social web and navigate the spread of information.
The new Quests feature enables users to request data on trending topics or identify the most influential accounts in specific fields or locations. According to Bluesky, this expansion of Attie is part of the company’s strategy to grow its user base and explore monetization opportunities. The AI assistant, launched in March, is currently free, though the company has considered charging for the service. Bluesky’s chief innovation officer, Jay Graber, emphasized that Attie is designed to reduce the barrier to entry for using the AT Protocol and empower users to customize their experience.
Bluesky has faced slowed user growth over the past eight months, with its user base doubling to 40 million last October but now standing at around 45.6 million registered accounts. The company has raised $100 million in funding to support its development and experimentation with tools like Attie and potential revenue streams such as premium subscriptions. The new Attie experience is currently in beta, with users being invited from a waitlist over the coming weeks.
