BMW Group released Cloud Efficiency Analytics (CLEA), an in-house FinOps system built on AWS with Reply, to monitor more than 14,000 cloud accounts across its cloud estate. It is the company's first major update to its cloud cost management solution since the initial deployment of its dashboard system.
CLEA reported a daily processing capacity of about $50 per month in compute, handling hundreds of thousands of account-service combinations. The system ingests billing data daily from AWS Cost and Usage Reports (CUR) and other providers, aggregating it to a daily cost per account per service.
CLEA is built on AWS and targets cost anomaly detection across BMW Group’s cloud accounts. Availability begins with daily anomaly detection and email alerts, initially for all BMW Group cloud account owners.
"The pipeline is scheduled after AWS CUR delivery is confirmed complete to avoid partial-day data," said Philipp Karg, from BMW Group. The system ensures that yesterday’s spend is analyzed and alerted on today.
The announcement follows the initial deployment of CLEA’s dashboard system. BMW Group said the system provides a more proactive approach to cloud cost management by forecasting and detecting anomalies daily.
BMW Group did not say how the system handles unexpected spikes in specific services, and it raises the question of how to balance automation with human judgment in cost anomaly detection. The system will continue to evolve based on user feedback.
