Caterpillar, a long-time leader in mining automation, is now applying its expertise in deploying AI to a wider range of industrial applications. The company has spent decades automating heavy machinery in mining environments, where labor shortages and hazardous conditions make automation particularly valuable. Today, Caterpillar sells automated haul trucks, drilling equipment, and remote-controlled construction tools, along with software for fleet management and terrain analysis. The company’s CTO, Jaime Mineart, said the firm is now using its experience from mining to develop AI solutions for dynamic environments like construction sites and quarries. "Now we’re in this super exciting time where we can take all of that learning from mining and bring it into much more dynamic environments," Mineart told TechCrunch at the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas.
Caterpillar is integrating AI into its tools for field technicians, offering a voice-activated assistant that provides repair guidance and identifies needed parts. The Cat AI Assistant uses the company’s proprietary data from its connected machines, which include 1.6 million assets and over 16 petabytes of structured data. Mineart noted that AI is also being used to create digital twins for manufacturing and to modernize legacy software through AI agents that generate and test new code. "We use AI agents to modernize legacy code, generate and test new software, and identify defects earlier," she said. The company is also applying AI across its enterprise operations and software development processes.
Mineart emphasized that deploying AI is more than just building the technology. "The hard part about autonomy and about physical AI is incorporating that technology into the customer jobsite and into the workflows," she explained. Caterpillar is relying on experienced operators to train AI systems and is preparing for a shift in how operators work as machines become more autonomous. The company plans to invest $100 million over five years to train its 118,000 employees in AI, autonomy, and robotics.
