The European Commission has mandated that ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox adhere to stricter online safety rules, including the removal of illegal content, as part of its Digital Services Act (DSA). The move comes after these platforms surpassed 45 million monthly users in the EU, meeting the threshold for enhanced scrutiny under the DSA. Companies failing to comply could face fines of up to 6 percent of their global revenue, according to the Commission.
OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, stated it is preparing to meet the additional compliance requirements. Roblox expressed pride in being the first gaming platform to reach this milestone in the EU and emphasized that safety is foundational to its operations. Reddit did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The EU is also enforcing its AI Act, the world’s first regulatory framework for AI development, and has initiated investigations into AI services, including potential breaches of competition rules by Google.
The expansion of the DSA follows pressure from Washington over the EU’s regulation of US tech companies, including fines against Elon Musk’s X. The Commission maintains its digital laws apply to companies regardless of their location. In July, Chinese marketplace AliExpress was fined €550 million under the DSA for not preventing the sale of illegal products on its platform.
