China's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has begun producing HBM3E chips in limited volumes, according to a report from The Information. The memory technology, used in many modern AI processors, represents a key component for training and running large-scale AI models. This development marks a significant move for China's domestic chip industry, which has faced challenges in accessing advanced memory solutions due to U.S. export restrictions.

CXMT's HBM3E production is still in its early stages, with the company reportedly three to five years behind industry leaders like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, which are already mass-producing HBM4. According to SemiAnalysis, CXMT's yield rates for HBM3E are estimated at around 25 percent as of June. Despite these challenges, the company's Shanghai IPO raised $8.6 billion, though none of the funds were allocated specifically for HBM development.

The report highlights that Alibaba's T-Head and Cambricon are testing CXMT's HBM3E chips and plan to integrate them into products starting in 2027. This could help China's AI chipmakers overcome one of the main obstacles in developing domestic alternatives to U.S.-made memory technologies.
