Google Deepmind released the AlphaGenome Atlas on September 9, 2026, saying it maps every possible single-letter change in the human genome. It is the company's first major update to its AI-driven genomics tools since the 2025 introduction of AlphaGenome.
The AlphaGenome Atlas is built on the AlphaGenome model, which reads DNA sequences up to one million letters long and predicts gene expression, regulatory protein binding, and transcript splicing. The dataset spans one petabyte, more than 30 times the size of the AlphaFold database for protein structures.
"The AlphaGenome Atlas provides an estimate of how each of the nine billion changes would likely affect molecular processes across hundreds of cell types and tissues," said Maximilian Schreiner, the article's author. This dataset helps researchers identify relevant genetic variants among a flood of genetic changes.
The announcement follows the 2025 release of AlphaGenome, which was designed to predict the effects of genetic variants. The AlphaGenome Atlas expands on this by precomputing predictions for all nine billion possible changes, making it more accessible for researchers.
Deepmind did not say how the atlas will be used in clinical settings, and it acknowledges that the tool is a research aid, not a diagnostic tool. The company said the atlas is available for noncommercial use through a web portal, an API, and as a skill in Google Antigravity.
