Deepseek released open-source programming tools for Huawei's Ascend chips on September 30, 2026, saying it aims to build a universal language for AI chip development. It is the company's first major software update since its collaboration with Huawei began.
Deepseek reported the release includes libraries for computation and data transfer, measured on Huawei's Ascend 950 chips. That compares with previous efforts focused on Nvidia's CUDA platform.
The tools are built on TileLang, a language developed by Peking University researchers, and target AI chip development. Availability begins with Huawei's Ascend 950 chips, initially for domestic developers.
"TileLang offers a simpler programming model than CUDA," said Deepseek's official WeChat channel. The company's main tool for its work on artificial general intelligence (AGI) is now TileLang.
The announcement follows Huawei's unveiling of new AI processors and supernode systems two weeks prior. The source frames the significance as a step toward closing the gap between China's chipmakers and model developers.
Deepseek did not say how widely TileLang will be adopted, and the open question remains whether it can challenge CUDA's dominance. The source says the tools are part of Huawei's broader strategy to support its chip ecosystem.
