DoorDash released its AI agent for text-to-order food on September 30, 2026, saying it allows users to place orders through Apple Messages. It is the company's first major update in food ordering since launching its app in 2014.
DoorDash reported no specific benchmark scores, but the AI agent is designed to understand prompts like 'order my usual' and suggest local recommendations based on user input. That compares with its previous app-based ordering system, which required users to navigate the app interface.
The AI agent is built on DoorDash's proprietary AI platform and targets food ordering convenience for users. Availability begins with a waitlist for U.S. users, initially for those interested in testing the feature.
"Users can send prompts like 'order my usual,' and the agent will understand that they mean their Friday night order," said Aisha Malik, DoorDash's spokesperson. The AI agent also allows users to request specific dishes and get local recommendations.
The announcement follows a growing trend of companies adopting personal AI agents that can handle tasks without requiring users to navigate apps or websites themselves. DoorDash said the launch is part of its effort to compete with rivals like Uber Eats and Grubhub.
DoorDash did not say how the AI agent handles complex orders or how it integrates with third-party platforms, and it raised the question of whether the feature will be available globally. The company said it will continue to refine the AI agent based on user feedback.
