Emerald AI, along with Google, Nvidia, and Anthropic, has formed the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) to secure space on the grid for more data centers. The coalition aims to integrate demand response into data center development, allowing temporary reductions in electricity use.
AEMA claims that pausing noncritical tasks and shifting compute loads could enable an additional 100 gigawatts of data centers to connect to the grid. The alliance includes utilities like AES, Constellation, National Grid, and NRG Energy, which have used demand response for decades to manage peak loads.
Traditionally, demand response involved large electricity users like factories reducing their usage during peak times in exchange for payments. Today, data centers can also participate by using backup generators. Emerald AI proposes an alternative to diesel generators, using its software to coordinate requests between utilities and data centers.
"Emerald AI’s software connects utilities directly to data centers, allowing them to respond quickly to requests, much like batteries," said Ayse Coskun, Emerald AI’s chief scientist. Coskun added that the technology could reduce the industry’s need for new generating sources but not eliminate it entirely.
The coalition also aims to help tech companies and utilities find new sites for data centers, an effort that has been challenging. Despite its promise, more sophisticated demand response won’t solve all of the grid’s problems today.
Emerald AI did not specify the exact number of data centers that will benefit from the coalition, and it remains unclear how quickly the technology can be scaled. The startup recently raised $150 million in a Series A, which should help with wider deployment.
