Google is implementing new app quality requirements to tackle memory chip shortages affecting the mobile industry. The changes focus on reducing memory usage and optimizing code to ensure better performance on devices. The company cited significant hardware supply constraints that are limiting device memory availability, which could impact user experience. These updates aim to help developers maintain app quality while adapting to a market where memory may be less accessible, particularly for low-end devices.

The new requirements include performance thresholds for dynamic memory usage and bitmap usage, along with code optimization standards to prevent app slowdowns and crashes. Google is also introducing tools to alert developers when their apps exceed these thresholds, allowing them to optimize their code. Additional diagnostic tools, including a Memory Limiter feature, will be available later this year to provide deeper insights and prevent excessive memory use.

According to Google, the changes are part of its effort to ensure Android app and game makers continue delivering quality experiences despite market challenges. Developers have until February 2027 to meet the new thresholds, as outlined on Google’s Android Developer site. The company also plans to require all Play Store apps to meet the Zero Tap Sign-In standard by April 2027.
