Google's Gemini is experiencing a decline in market share, according to recent data from AI text recognition platform Pangram. The analysis of model market shares, based on submitted texts, reveals that Gemini's share fell from 12% to 1.9% in July 2026, a sharp drop that Pangram describes as a 'collapse.' This trend is also reflected in OpenRouter data, which tracks similar usage patterns. Both sources indicate that Gemini's market share is shrinking, signaling a shift in user preference toward other models like ChatGPT and Claude.
OpenAI has maintained over 50% market share every month since tracking began, while Anthropic's share rose from 4.3% to 14.9%, primarily in technical and scientific fields. Meanwhile, Google's website market share dipped slightly to 26.8% in July 2026 from 27% the previous month, though it was just 9.4% a year earlier. Google claims one billion monthly Gemini App users, but the metric is considered a low-quality signal by analysts.
The data highlights significant blind spots across all tracking sources. Pangram mainly measures writing tasks, where Gemini has consistently lagged behind ChatGPT and Claude. OpenRouter focuses on open-weight models, while Similarweb excludes mobile apps. Despite these differences, all three sources point to a consistent trend: users are adopting Gemini less frequently. This could be a contributing factor to the recent leadership changes at Google DeepMind, including the departure of senior figures like Demis Hassabis.
