Intelligence, the company behind Design Arena, has raised $7.9 million in a seed round led by Index Ventures. The funding comes as the platform continues to serve 5.3 million users globally. Design Arena functions as a sophisticated model router, allowing users to rank outputs for websites, images, and other visual formats. The tool's enterprise value lies in its ability to provide instant feedback for media-generating AI models, which is a critical service for frontier labs. According to Grace Li, co-founder of Intelligence, the platform is currently generating $60 million in annual recurring revenue, solidifying its role as a key source of human-led evaluation data for the AI industry. The company also tracks how design tastes evolve across regions and over time, noting that web dashboards in Asia tend to favor a more maximalist design style. These measures complement automated benchmarks, which, while scalable, are often susceptible to manipulation, as demonstrated by the Hugging Face breach last week. Despite the potential, the market for human feedback is not guaranteed to be profitable. Yupp, a similar startup, shut down earlier this year after raising $33 million, despite having over 1.3 million users. However, other startups based on human evaluation seem to be thriving. LM Arena, which uses a similar approach for text-based responses, raised $150 million in a Series A just four months after launching its paid product.

Intelligence's platform allows users to rank outputs from best to worst, providing critical input into what users truly want. This process is essential for models aiming to improve in the design space, as Li noted. The company's ability to track regional design trends highlights the importance of human judgment in AI development. While automated benchmarks offer scale, they often lack the nuance of human feedback, making platforms like Design Arena a valuable addition to the AI ecosystem. The success of such platforms depends on their ability to provide accurate, real-time insights that align with user preferences. This is especially important as AI models continue to evolve and require more refined evaluation methods. The challenge lies in balancing the need for human input with the efficiency of automated systems. Intelligence's approach represents a significant step toward achieving this balance.
