Apple Intelligence features are now easier to disable on macOS 27 Golden Gate thanks to a new command-line tool. The tool, called RemoveMacAI, was created by developer Om Lahore and allows users to turn off Apple Intelligence features with one click.
RemoveMacAI deletes Apple Intelligence models and stops macOS from downloading them again, freeing up to 12GB of storage. The developer said that the models can actually take up over 30GB, according to The Verge. The tool also lets users keep some Apple Intelligence features while removing others.
The tool works by using a configuration profile approved in System Settings and Apple’s asset service, ensuring System Integrity Protection remains active. It does not directly touch any files in /System, making the process fully reversible. Users can revert the changes and have macOS re-download the models when they turn a feature back on.
"Reminds me of all the de-crufting you’ve always needed to do when you install Windows.
Looks like we’ve gotten to the point on macOS too, where you need to run third-party scripts on a new OS installation to gain back control of your system resources and remove unwanted crapware," said a Hacker News user.
This sentiment reflects growing user frustration with Apple Intelligence features.
The tool highlights the growing demand for user control over AI features on macOS, despite Apple’s focus on AI-driven upgrades. While some users are happy to use Apple Intelligence, others are seeking ways to remove it. The developer said the tool is open source and has 1,700 stars on GitHub as of this writing.
Apple did not provide an official method to disable Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 Golden Gate, leaving users to rely on third-party tools. The tool’s popularity suggests a significant portion of users prefer to manage their system resources independently. The tool’s success may influence future updates to macOS.
