Meta released Muse, an AI app, on September 8, saying it offers a polished design and highly capable AI model under the hood. It is the company's first major AI app update since launching the product in September.

Meta reported 3.4 million downloads for Muse, measured as of the most recent estimates from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. That compares with 2.5 million downloads at the start of the week.

Muse is built on Meta's AI technology and targets users seeking an advanced AI assistant with features like video chat and smart glasses integrations. Availability began on September 8, initially for users in the U.S. and Canada.

"The trick with Muse is to build promotional units that can showcase something the AI agent can do for the user, based on Meta’s understanding of what would be useful or helpful to them specifically," said Connor Hayes, Meta’s Head of Threads. Meta is marketing the app to existing Facebook and Instagram users.

The announcement follows Meta's promotion of Muse at its annual Meta Connect developer conference. Meta's approach to marketing Muse differs from its approach with Threads, as it focuses on showcasing AI capabilities rather than user-generated content.

Meta did not say how long the app's growth will continue, and the source raises the open question of whether Muse's success is due to Meta's marketing efforts alone. The app's growth cannot be chalked up to Meta's marketing efforts alone, as ads promoting the app only account for 6% of the ad impressions from launch through September 19.
