During its second-quarter earnings call, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted how artificial intelligence is accelerating the company's ability to develop and release new apps. Zuckerberg said the company is planning to build more ideas and scale them using recommendation systems powered by AI. 'I’m…excited about how AI is helping our teams speed up product development,' he said. 'Earlier this year, we shipped Instagram Instants. We also just launched Forum, a standalone Groups app, and Seller, a standalone Marketplace app. I expect it to become a lot easier to ship new apps.'

Zuckerberg noted that AI is improving Meta's core business by making its apps more relevant and delivering better results for businesses. He added that the company is starting to deliver more novel products and will have a lot more soon. 'AI is improving our core business; it’s making our apps more relevant and delivering better results for businesses. We’re starting to deliver more novel products, and we’ll have a lot more there soon as well,' he said. The CEO emphasized that large language models (LLMs) are allowing the company to test new ideas more quickly and scale them effectively.

Meta has previously attempted to launch standalone social apps but struggled to find success. The company's earlier efforts, including apps like Slingshot and Paper, were eventually shut down. However, the recent success of Threads, which has 500 million monthly active users, demonstrates how AI is helping new apps scale. Zuckerberg noted that Threads leveraged existing user bases and cross-platform promotion, while LLMs are also driving content recommendations and improving user engagement. 'We are finding that LLMs are increasingly capable of delivering ranking and recommendations gains,' Meta's CFO Susan Li said during the call.
